Author and Spoken Word artist Tu’Shouney Phillips is a powerful rising talent with a colorful imagination. He’s on a mission to teach and inspire people everywhere to shift their perspectives from fear to love. From spoken word stages to Universities to screenplays — Phillips is creating worlds with his words, a place where everyone can go to elude confusion and darkness in the world.

“I am a creator of worlds. In my stories, in my poetry — In those two minutes where I have your attention, my intention is to bring you into my imagination so you can visit and experience the world that I create. I use words to create worlds where people can get away and escape,” says Phillips.

The subject of love is paramount on Phillip’s curriculum. “The purpose of the life isn’t to love, but to break down the walls that life has built in order to love wholly and fully,” he teaches. Passionately uplifting his followers, the writer wants people to look objectively at our current system and way of thinking. To regain control of our minds, we have to live out of love so we can create the communities that are needed for us to properly run and grow,” he urges.

As unprecedented turns of events have unfolded around the globe since 2020 — the young and the old, the rich and the poor, everyone’s lives have been impacted by COVID-19 and the post-pandemic dominos effect that changed how we do life, education, and work. From working from home, virtual classes, to changes in currency as shifts in crypto currency is on the rise, Phillips is no stranger to facing the unexpected.

So many things prepared him for his master class on love and his upcoming book project. He recalls living moving to New York after receiving a football scholarship to attend a junior college. The business management major was one class away from graduation when the college that he attended shut down abruptly. His disappointment grew before he realized the power of shifting his focus and mindset. He would later discover that his life’s work was to teach and inspire through his writings.

“I tried to do so many other things, I tried to control the outcome of my destiny but it wasn’t until I relinquished control that I found my purpose. At first it felt like I had no aim but now I realize that I was waiting because everything happens in its time,” he says.

“I remember like it was yesterday, I was sitting at a bar with a friend and a man sat next to me. The bartender told me that he was a poet, like myself, and he invited me to an open mic. That night, there was a competition where we had to write something on the spot and I won that competition. From that moment on, I realized that I loved writing and that writing was my calling,” says Phillips.

To date, Phillips has performed spoken word at The University of Alabama, The iconic Nuyorican Poets Café, and on many other stages both nationally and abroad.

His highly anticipated, debut book project is expected to hit the shelves in 2023.
